Six ways to help your child drink more water

15.10.2019 0:00   Buckinghamshire

As most of us know, the human body is largely composed of water. In adult men, about 60% of their bodies are water. However, fat tissue does not have as much water as lean tissue. In adult women, fat makes up more of the body than men, so about 55% of their bodies are made of water (1).

Water can be easily lost through sweat and urine. It is essential to understand the importance of drinking water at different stages of life and children, especially, should be encouraged to drink water more regularly.

The diagram bellow highlights the amount of water intake that is needed for children between the ages of 3-13.

Adequate drinking water

Although this may not seem like a large amount, all parents will know how hard it can be to convince your child to regularly drink water and stay hydrated

Water not only quenches your thirst but also provides a number of benefits for children, especially when it comes their physical health. As such, it is important children are always encouraged to drink the right amount of water daily.

See below for tips on how to help your child drink the right amount of water:

1) Facilitate the drinking of water at home

Make it easier for your child to access delicious BWT Magnesium Mineralized Water at home by teaching them how to use your water filtration jug, tap or water cooler. Consider a sports bottle with a design they can relate to or a sealed cup, this will allow them to take the water with them around the whole house.

2) Regular sips throughout the day

Encouraging your child to have small, regular sips throughout the day is a great way of measuring just how much water your child is drinking. Slowly increase the intake of water until it matches the required amount for a child. Create drinking intervals throughout the day, ask your child to create fun names for the intervals, involve them in the process, and let their creativity soar.

5) Special bottles/cups/glasses

From a young age, children love being in charge. Let your child decide what they want to drink their water from. Whether it is a fun cup, a bottle or glass, give them a choice and then use that every time you want your child to drink more water. Encourage them to help themselves. Allowing your child to go and fill their cup/bottle/glass up whenever they want can be a treat in itself!

6) Be a water role model

Children watch and learn from their parents, so if your child sees you regularly drinking water from the tap, a water cooler or filter jug, most likely they will follow. Always set an example before encouraging your child to do the same.

The benefits of Magnesium for your child

Magnesium absorption plays a vital role for children. This mineral is important for the development of bones, teeth and for growth. As the body is not able to produce this mineral itself, absorption must be through external sources.
The daily requirement for magnesium, according to the Government’s Dietary Recommendations Report, is approximately 120mg for children aged between 4-6 and 200mg for children aged between 7-10 (2). Generally, daily magnesium requirements can be covered by a balanced diet: green vegetables, whole grain products, oatmeal, fish, vegetables and nuts. Magnesium Mineralized water is a simple way to supplement the diet especially on treat days when the diet is less balanced.

As we all know, encouraging children to drink water regularly is challenging but with the right encouragement and motivation, it is possible. Everyday more people are becoming conscientious about how important hydration is for children. Schools like, The Highcrest Academy (High Wycombe), are taking steps to ensure that children are encouraged to drink water on a regular basis and as such have installed BWT’s water coolers to make sure drinking water is easily accessible to their students. BWT recently conducted a drinking water survey on behalf of the school and results showed that the most popular drink in the school, is water!
